Adventures in Kenya: Connecting with Students and Nature

True professional development in education doesn’t happen in a stuffy lecture hall or a dry textbook. In reality, it happens when educators from completely different corners of the world sit down together, share a warm cup of Kenyan tea, and just talk about what actually matters: how to inspire our students.
This past April, a crew of 21 passionate educators and 2 SPIRAL management staff packed their bags for an intensive, 12-day journey to Kenya. The mission? Pure collaboration! This group wasn’t there to lecture; they were there to share ideas, swap teaching strategies, and build real-deal international friendships. Ideally, this goes hand-in-hand with SPIRAL’s goals of fostering deep peer-to-peer collaboration, sharing instructional strategies, and building lasting international partnerships.

Inside the Kenyan Classroom: Going Beyond Observations
This wasn’t your average educational sightseeing trip. Instead, our group rolled up their sleeves and got to work. They partnered directly with amazing local teachers at St. Charles Lwanga School, Gituamba Primary School, and the Tinga Town School. Check out their activities!

Safari, Culture, and Connection
A point often overlooked is you can’t fully understand a school system without immersing oneself in the local culture! With this in mind, teachers went far beyond the classroom walls, got to truly experience the rich heritage and landscape of Kenya. They were lead on an unforgettable journey through the Maasai Mara and the Great Rift Valley, anchoring all of their hard work in the beautiful, real-world context of the region.

What’s Next? (Hint: We’re Just Getting Started!)
Above all, the energy and trust built during this Kenya trip laid an incredible foundation. With this, we are so excited to channel these fresh insights and local friendships into our upcoming programs. We already have future trips lined up for later this year—and we plan to keep this momentum every year, moving forward.
Thanks to the foundation laid out this spring, our future clients can look forward to programs that are deeply connected, expertly coordinated, and genuinely impactful for teachers, students and the incredible local Kenyan communities.
